FIFL Experience: Drafted by the Billings
Thunderbolts in the first round (#1 overall) in the 2006 FIFL
Draft. Won Rookie of the Year honors in 2006. Ran for personal
best 202 yards in week 9 of the 2008 FIFL season against Colorado.
Ran for 1,000 or more yards in his first nine seasons in the
FIFL. Oldest player to lead league in rushing (1,201 in 2019).
Professional Experience: Played for
the Tri-City Diesel (NIFL) in 2004 where he ran for a Conference-best
1,014 yards... Ran 239 times for a 4.2 average and 31 touchdowns.
Named to the 2004 Conference All-Star Team for the Pacific
Conference... Began the season with the Cincinnati Swarm in
2004, however the team folded before the season started.
College Experience: Cates was one of
the most prolific rushers in Division II football history,
while setting the PSAC all-time record for rushing yards,
rushing touchdowns, total points and came within just six
carries of setting the conference record for rushing attempts,
as he finished with 937. He has the top three best single-season
rushing yards marks in school history, while rushing for 5,647
yards in his career, the majority of which came between his
sophomore and senior seasons. The all-time leading rusher
in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference history with 5,647
yards, Cates owns nine of the top 10 rushing totals in California
(PA) history, topped by a 307 yard, 5 touchdown performance
against Cheyney College in 2001. His 286 yard effort against
Geneva that same year earned him Don Hanson Tri-Player of
the Week honors. Finishing his senior season with 1,673 yards,
the second best total in Division II, and 21 touchdowns, Cates
was named PSAC Offensive Player of the Year, a Second Team
Daktronics/CoSida All-American for the second straight year,
to the Football Gazette's First Team, and was nominated for
the Harlon Hill Award as the top player in Division II. Prior
to his 1,935 yard 1999 season, which ranks third in Conference
history and tenth best in Division II, only one other Vulcan
rusher had ever reached 1,000 yards in a season. Majored in
Sports Management.
