FIFL Experience: Named to the 2001 National
Conference All-Pro Team... Currently 8th all-time in tackles
with 634... 6th all-time as a linebacker. Traded to Honolulu
in week 4 of 2005 season for QB Jay McDonagh.
Professional Experience: After college,
Hughes had a brief stint with the San Francisco 49ers before
blowing out his shoulder in his first year during pre-season
training camp... Played for the Sioux City Attack (IFL) in
2000, Sioux City Bandits (NIFL) in 2001 and 2002, and the
Omaha Beef (NIFL) in 2003.
College: He left his small town of Eastland
behind after high school to pursue a football career at the
University of Iowa where he was named All-Big 10 linebacker
from 1996 to 1998. He is still ranked fifth with the Hawkeye's
for all-time career tackles.
Personal: Hughes
went to high school in Eastland, Texas where he made All-Sate
as a running back as well as defensive back in 1993 and 1994...When
he isn't on the field, you can find Hughes working in the
medical sales field and doing anything connected with the
outdoors, including golf. It could be said that Hughes was
born to play the game of football; his grandfather started
the tradition by coaching the game and his father still coaches.
Hughes just feels lucky to still be playing and most of all,
he has fun doing it. Though short-lived, he still considers
his time spent with the 49ers as one of his greatest football
moments.
